In the following probability activity, students will have the opportunity to explore intersections, unions, and complements using Venn diagrams. This covers the New York State Standard HSS.CP.A.1: "Describe events as subsets of a sample space (the set of outcomes) using characteristics (or categories) of the outcomes, or as unions, intersections, or complements of other events ("or," "and," "not")." My goal for this activity is to use visuals to support logical thinking. Venn diagrams are a strong visual that can help students understand relationships between sets. These graphic organize can help students solve real-world problems and understand more abstract logic skills. Students will be expected to have knowledge of how a Venn diagram works before this lesson.
